Held since 1974, World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide action to protect our environment. Now, it is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Every year, a different theme and host country, where the official celebrations take place, is picked. 2019's host country is China.

According to the World Health Organization, 97% of cities in low and middle-income countries do not meet air quality guidelines. That percentage becomes 49% for high-income countries. World Environment Day events across the world united people against this issue and gave them an opportunity to address this growing problem. Through the years, many alternate names were used to describe World Environment Day, including Eco Day and WED. A total of 2,879 events were held internationally in support of WED 2019.

From June 5th to June 16th of 1972, the Stockholm Conference was held, on the first day of which, World Environment Day was started by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The day was first celebrated in 1974 and encouraged governments and organizations to put environmentally friendly programs into action.
